Our 2023 Year 7 students have had their final workshop supported by our Yr10 Peer Mentors. Mr Scott Smith Leader of Wellbeing Year 7 2023 and PCG teachers 2023, met with students and took them through what to expect in the life of a Newman College student. Congratulations to all students who attended as they showed a great Marist Spirit and energy in the way they engage with staff and students.
Marble Bar Primary School Visit
The students of Marble Bar Primary School visited Newman College as part of their STEM Camp in Perth.
Marble Bar introduced Virtual Reality technology to our Year 9 Design Thinking students through their multi award-winning Marble Bar Virtual Worlds gallery, whilst we showed the Marble Bar students the features of the John Henry Newman Learning Hub.
After the sharing of ideas, students from both schools collaborated in some STEM experiments that were about sound, which was expertly run by Miss McKnight.
Today’s events mark the beginning of a strong partnership with our Pilbara friends, and we look forward to collaborating with them more in the future.
Year 9 Italian Class
The year 9 Italian class had an excursion to Fremantle this week. They visited the welcome walls out the front of the Maritime Museum, the fisherman’s Warf and the cappuccino strip and learnt about how Italian immigration has influenced Western Australia.
They enjoyed a delicious Italian lunch at the Italian Club of bread, cheese and cold meats for entrée, pasta for the main and gelato for dessert.
Year 10 Edge Barista Training
Earlier this week, the Year 10 Edge class attended a barista training course at local café Diamattina. During the course, the students learned the basics of coffee service, as well as taking orders and familiarisation with the many varieties of coffee that people may order in a café. In the future, the students will also be doing work experience at the Newman College Learning Hub café, as well as at Auditorium events.
Year 7 science
All students across Year 7 science partook in a Solar Car Competition. Students were given 4 weeks to build a car from a kit provided and could change the wheel size, gear size, front or rear wheel drive, and solar panel angle to make their car the fastest.
They then tested out their created Solar Cars in a 20-metre race to see which was the fastest car over the finish line.
This year the winners go to science 7.4 with the team formed up of Angus, Beau, Sunny and Kyan. This team will now go on to represent Newman College in the interschool state final next year hosted by Synergy. Congratulations, and good work!
SHINE World Scholar’s Cup
Over two days in October, three teams from Newman College competed at the Perth round of the World Scholar’s Cup. The World Scholar’s Cup encourages a wide range of academic endeavors that invites collaboration and critical thinking in a wide range of disciplines.
The competition involves four distinct challenges. The Scholar’s Bowl is where students solve analytical questions and multimedia challenges. Collaborative writing involves students responding to a range of writing prompts and collaborate on their individual pieces. Students also engage in a team debate, and a Scholar’s Challenge.

There were so many outstanding achievements of our three teams this year, too many to include in this short report. The following teams should be commended not only for their outstanding achievements but their collaborative and creative spirit on the two challenging days. All teams have been invited to participate in the global rounds of the competition.
Junior Team One: Arlo Gaunt, Anabel Raguseo and Lachlan Moir-Scott
A silver medal for their team challenge (ranking ninth overall).
Anabel Raguseo performed exceptionally well in writing.
Lachlan Moir-Scott achieved gold medals in the following areas: Literature, Social Studies, Art and History.
Arlo Gaunt achieved three silver medals and one gold medal for Literature, Art, History and Science.
Junior Team Two: Hannah Woolfrey, Alyssa Petracca, and Micaela Buddle
Micaela Buddle was awarded a gold medal for debating and the team bowl, and a silver medal for Social Studies.
Hannah Woolfrey was awarded fifth place for writing, and two silver medals and one gold medal for History and Social Studies.
The team overall placed fourth in writing and placed tenth overall.
Hannah, Alyssa, and Micaela’s team also qualified for the global round.

Awards Assembly
Thursday 24 November Years 7 – 11 students will gather in the Sports Complex for our Annual Awards celebration. This event will provide the opportunity for students to be recognised for their sporting, academic and cultural contributions. Parents of award winners will be invited to attend this significant event. The event will be recorded and shared on the College YouTube channel.
Year 10 River Cruise
On Wednesday 23 November students are invited to celebrate the annual River Cruise. This event is arrange as a way for students to come together and celebrate their year as a Marist community. Information has been sent by Mrs Sarah Ellam Leader of Wellbeing Year 10. We look forward to sharing photos of the successful event next newsletter.
It was wonderful to welcome our 2023 students to the Marian Campus on Monday morning. Students and their parents had the opportunity to meet their Kindy teachers and spend some time familiarising themselves with their Kindy classrooms and classmates. Parents were also invited to an information session and morning tea in the Marian library, to assist them in their child’s transition into Newman College.

Marian Assembly
Last Friday, Pre-Primary Green students led us in an amazing assembly that showcased their co-constructed Talk4Writing text “The Three Chickens Gruff” with a very grumpy onion that lived under the bridge. It is wonderful to see these examples of the students writing showcased, and brought to life through a dramatic representation of the story.
Well done also to all our amazing Merit Award winners, who demonstrated in many ways the College’s pedagogical pillars of Collaborate, Celebrate, Challenge and Create.
Lavalla Assembly
On Friday, students from 4 Blue presented a wonderful play called “The Pirates and the Monster”! This was a lovely story which shared the message that education will open a lot of ‘hidden passages’ and we can share in its treasures! We also acknowledged the efforts of students receiving the Catholic Performing Arts Awards. Congratulations to all students on their success over these past few weeks!
Remembrance Day services
Remembrance Day was respectfully marked across the College, with students at both Marian and Lavalla observing a minute’s silence in their respective Remembrance Day Services.
Students at both campuses were reminded of the significance of the day, as we all continue to show our gratitude for the fallen service men and women who bravely fought to provide us with the freedoms that we enjoy today.
Year 5/6 AFL Dockers Cup
The Year 5/6 AFL girls competed on Monday 31st October. The team went through the pool games undefeated. We then played IONA College in the final as they were also undefeated from their pool.
The final was a tense battle, with our girls coming away victorious. The team should be very proud of their display of sportsmanship and football skills, they played at a very high standard throughout the whole day.
A big thank you to Miss Tildi Sergeant for helping to coach the team on the day and the parents who came along and supported.
Swimming lessons
This week, students across Year 1 to Year 6 began swimming lessons in our College pool. There have been lots of excited faces as they embark on this 2-week program that is run by the Newman Swim Club.
There are also some items of lost property on each campus as a result of these lessons. You may wish to pop past and see whether any of these items belong to your child/ren.
2023 Transition Afternoon
Next Friday 25 November, students from Kindy to Year 5 will undertake a transition session, which is designed to provide students with a smooth move into their 2023 class.
Students will be informed of their 2023 classroom allocation and will then spend a session with their 2023 classroom teacher and classmates. This session will be focused on familiarising students with their new learning space and undertaking some fun activities.
Class lists will be distributed to families that afternoon, and parents are encouraged to support their child’s placement and successful transition by engaging in positive discussion about the process and excitement about the future possibilities for their child. No changes to class allocations will be possible, once class lists have been distributed.
Year 3 Transition – 2023
On Friday 25 November, all current Year 2 students will attend a Transition Day at the Lavalla Campus, in preparation for 2023.
The purpose of the day is to familiarise students with the Lavalla Campus, and will involve a range of lessons and activities that will allow them an experience of the Campus.
Students should wear their blue Newman College sports uniform and bring their school bag containing recess, lunch, a water bottle and the College hat.
Families can drop students off at the Campus from 8.15am, and students can assemble in the Lavalla Hall where their Year 2 teachers will be waiting. Students should be collected from Lavalla from 2.45pm.
iPad Program – 2023
To enhance learning opportunities within the classroom, from 2023 Year 2 and 3 students will be provided with access to new College owned and controlled iPads. The iPad bundle will include use of the iPad with 256GB of storage, Logitech Rugged Combo, Touch Keyboard and Apple Pen. All software will be included.
The iPads will be stored and charged at school in locked cabinets located in every classroom
Students will have access to the same College owned iPad at school until the end of Year 6
At the end of Year 6, students will be required to return the device to the College
Parents and Students will be required to sign a Responsible User Agreement that outlines their obligations and responsibilities
If a student leaves the school at any time before the end of Year 6, the device will be restored to factory settings and repurposed
There will be an ICT levy of $300 per year on your child’s fee account
Students in Year 3 to Year 5, will continue to utilise their BYOD iPad device as per the previous arrangement.
We continue to encounter challenges with student’s appropriate use of digital devices on a regular basis. Many of these challenges occur outside the school setting but become problematic when they affect a range of Newman students. Further, many of these problems could be avoided with appropriate controls being implemented by families on their child’s device.
The College utilises a Cyberhound appliance that allows us to allow/block websites and filter internet traffic looking for inappropriate or concerning language the students have used. Additionally, we also have mail filtering for all emails sent and received to the Newman email domain which looks for inappropriate content. However, with Apple iMessage the College cannot pick up inappropriate content due to the way that the iMessage service works, whereby Apple encrypts the message when it is send it and it only gets unencrypted on the recipients end.
Parents can disable iMessage for their child. Parents should be establish their child’s device as a “child” account that you create through Apple family. This will allow you to disable built in apps including iMessage and FaceTime.
Other services like FamilyZone also allow parents to control usage, by locking the app during certain times of the day. However, your child would still be able to see the messages outside of those hours. There’s more information on how iMessage keeps your messages safe here and how you can block built in apps on Apple Family here.
Families are reminded that students ARE NOT permitted to use any messaging service during the school day, and we ask parents to support this policy by not contacting or replying to their child through their iPad at any point during the school day.

As we move closer to the end of the year, we recognise that the students are starting to get tired and ready for the summer holidays. During this week, we have taken the time to remind students about the importance of still following school routines and ensuring they are being respectful and polite to their peers and staff.
This gives us the opportunity to reflect on ourselves as Marists and our Marist Theme for the year; “Known and Loved, Dignity For All”. We are being called not simply to recognise the dignity of all, but let the world know about it by the way we live our lives for and with others.

This week we introduced 2023 students into both entry points of the College. Our budding Newman Beings for Kindy in 2023, and our incoming Year 7 students joined the campuses on Monday and Tuesday respectively. We thank everyone involved with these transition activities and we look forward to welcoming the new families into our Marist family in the coming months. As with all things, finishing well is connected to starting well. We ask all our students to focus on finishing the 2022 school year well. We still have three weeks to go, and lots of magnificent learning experiences are planned to see out the year.
This weekend marks the feast day of Christ the King. We are reminded on this feast day that faith in Christ, the King of love, provides an avenue for hope, love, freedom, and ultimately inner peace. The power in Christ as King, is not the power of earthly wealth or riches. It is the power to rise above, to liberate from evil, to defeat temptation and therefore avoid the pain of sin. The power of love draws good from evils. Love can melt a hardened heart. Love brings peace to the bitterest conflict and ignites hope amid darkness. The state of grace offered through love is never forced, it respects our freedom. Christ came “to bear witness to the truth” (Jn 18: 37), that being the link between love and inner peace. In our consciences, we get to make the choice. To choose good or evil. To choose truth or illusion. The Marist characteristic most closely linked to this notion of love is Presence, in essence to show love to those around us, we must be present to our community and those closest to us, present with both our time and attention.
Instrumental Program
Research from neuroscience shows that music can enhance the function of the brain in children. Musical endeavours like singing and learning to play an instrument, stimulates the brain. This full brain workout leads to improved brain structure with the formation of additional neural connections.
The Music Department is now accepting applications for instrumental/vocal lessons for 2023. We offer lessons on piano, voice, flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, electric and acoustic guitar, bass guitar, drums, percussion, violin, viola, cello, double bass and ukulele.

The College uses the Australian Curriculum judging standards across the College to discern the end of year grades for student reports. Consideration is given to a variety of inputs such as observations, running records, summative and formative assessments, to report on each learning area. I thank our teaching staff for their diligence, accuracy, and professionalism used to prepare meaningful reporting as a critical element of our Learning Cycle.

The most powerful marketing strategy in our community is the conversation that is had at the dinner table between students and their families. These conversations generally predicated on the day these students have with particular reference to their teachers. As a parent, I have heard about so many teachers and enjoy hearing how engaged my children are in their learning. It is the hope in our community that student engagement which leads to growth is underpinned by good teaching.
At our recent Newman Parents Committee Meeting, a question was put to me about why there has been a significantly high turnover of teachers. There are a few reasons that I put to the group that I would like to share with the wider community.
Promotional positions: Newman College is committed to developing teachers and leaders. In recent days we were awarded the Educator 2022 5-Star Innovative School Award (see Educator Award below). This program is indicative of how we develop leadership. The fruits of such a program are better learning experiences for our students. What it also does is give leaders the opportunity to move into promotional positions, either in our school or in other communities. This year we have seen 9 teachers and leaders appointed to promotional positions across the sector. This includes myself as Director of School Improvement for Marist Schools Australia, Lisa McClue as Principal of Our Lady of Good Counsel Karrinyup, Jenny Miraudo as Deputy Principal Teaching and Learning at Corpus Christi College Bateman, Katya Anderson as Head of Primary at Corpus Christi College Bateman, to name just a few.
In addition, Stuart McClorey, former Leader of Wellbeing Primary, is our new Director of Mission and Catholic Identity. Mr Simon Martino, former Director of Mission and Catholic Identity, has been appointed Deputy Principal Secondary.
Commensurate experience: We have teachers who have been in our community for a significant time and made the decision to move to other Colleges to deepen their experience as teachers.
Opportunity: Post COVID-19 restrictions, there has been a general teacher shortage across the country. Consequently, there are more opportunities for teachers to move when positions become available.
The benefits of recruitment are that we have appointed outstanding teachers and leaders who will commence in our College in 2023. Newman is a good school of choice for employees and I am looking forward to seeing our continued growth in 2023.
Educator Award
In recent weeks Newman College was awarded the Educator 2022 5-Star Innovative School Award presented to only 5 Western Australian Schools.
The Award was for our Middle Leadership Program, Leadership Accelerator – Drive to Excel. We partnered with The Liminal Space – Dr Shane Glasson, and Brendan Spillane Consulting to create and deliver this bespoke ‘Leadership Acceleration’ course that runs over nine days. This model uses cutting edge research to develop our leaders individually first, then as a collective, aligned with the College’s strategic intent.
Congratulations for our Middle Leaders for the way in which they immersed themselves in the course.

With 3 weeks to go until the end of Term, we look forward to the Christmas festivities. Advent commences 27 November. This is a really important time in our liturgical year as we prepare for the birth of Christ. Across our College, we look forward to our liturgies and our prayer is that we finish well.
